Most of a web site’s visitors if the site doesn’t make use of virtual agents, will normally leave a site without a trace, without buying anything or without giving you as a website owner their contact details. The conversion rate is dependent on a lot of factors and there is no generic statistics of what is normal, simply because there is nothing that can be labeled as “normal”. The conversion rate is depending on the average order value, navigability, relevance, relevant traffic etc. Many sites with quite low average order values, have conversion rates between 3-7%, while for vastly higher average order values the conversion rate might be as low as just between 0.5 – 1.5%. As mentioned, there really is no generic conversion rate that can be used between sites, since each site is unique. Instead, the conversion rate should primarily be seen as a metric to benchmark each site to itself during a certain period of time.
